How to Set Up a Google Business Profile Correctly.

A practical walk-through of creating and verifying a Google Business Profile: name, category, address, hours and the mistakes that cause suspensions.

A correct Google Business Profile needs five things: your real business name, one accurate main category, an address or service area that matches reality, working hours and phone number, and successful verification. Getting these right on day one matters more than adding extras later, because wrong basics are what cause suspensions and confused customers. The profile itself is free.

What to prepare

Search your business name on Google Maps first. Many shops already have a listing that Google or customers created. If one exists, claim it instead of creating a second one. Duplicates split your reviews and confuse the system.

Then collect the details in one place: exact name as it appears on your signboard, full address with PIN code, a phone number you actually answer, opening hours including your weekly off day, and your website if you have one.

The setup steps

  1. Sign in with a Google account that belongs to the business owner, not a freelancer or an employee who may leave.
  2. Search for your business on Google Maps, or go to the Business Profile page, and choose to add or claim it.
  3. Enter the name exactly as it appears on your board and invoices.
  4. Pick your main category. Choose the most specific one that fits, such as “Tailor” rather than a vague “Shop”.
  5. Add your address if customers visit you. If you travel to customers instead, hide the address and list the areas you serve.
  6. Add phone, website, hours and opening date.
  7. Start verification and follow the method Google offers.

Details that cause trouble

The name. Write only your business name. Adding “Best Tailors in Thrissur” or a list of services breaks Google’s guidelines and is a common reason for suspension. Whatever is on your board is the name.

The category. The main category tells Google what you are. You can add secondary categories for other things you genuinely do, but keep the main one honest and specific.

The address. Use the real location where you can be found. A virtual office or a friend’s address is not allowed for a public address. Write it the same way every time, on your website, Facebook page and elsewhere, so the details agree.

Service-area businesses. Say you run an electrician service in Chalakudy and work from home. Hide your home address and list the towns you cover. Do not list areas you do not really serve.

Verification

Google verifies that you control the business. Depending on your profile, this may be a postcard with a code, a phone or text code, an email, or a short video showing your premises and signboard. If a video is asked for, show the street, the signboard, and the inside of the shop or workspace in one continuous take.

Do not create a new profile when verification is slow. Wait, check the status, and follow the on-screen instructions. Repeated new attempts can look suspicious.

After it goes live

Once verified, spend twenty minutes on the following:

  • Write a plain description of what you do and who you serve. No keyword lists, no phone numbers in the text.
  • Add your services or products with short, honest descriptions.
  • Upload a few real photos: the exterior, the inside, and your work.
  • Set special hours for festivals and holidays when they come up.
  • Reply politely to every review, good or bad.

What to steer clear of

  • Changing the name or address casually after verification. Large edits can trigger a re-check.
  • Buying reviews or asking staff to post them. This is against the policies and can remove reviews or the whole profile.
  • Using a tracking phone number as the main number without keeping your real one visible.
  • Letting an agency own the profile. Make sure your own Google account is listed as an owner, so you can always get in.

A complete, accurate profile does not guarantee a position on the map, and nobody can promise one. What it does is give Google and customers correct information to work with.
